In addition, a network of already existing streets will be renewed and integrated into the western bypass and engineering networks renovated. The 2nd stage works of Vilnius western bypass are planned to be finished by April 2014. “Throughout the years of operation we have constructed several bypasses in the major cities of the country. In 1964 we built Kaunas city northern bypass and in twenty years we worked at the western bypass of the city. The experience of our specialists was enhanced even more during the construction of Vilnius southern bypass in 2006-2008. Then we built the longest (at that time) overhead road (380 m) in Lithuania, whereas during the 1st stage of Vilnius western bypass works we reconstructed the old Lazdynai bridge”, told Giedrius Cvilikas, Director General of Kauno tiltai. The whole Vilnius western bypass consists of three stages: - 1st stage –reconstruction of Lazdynai bridge and construction of highway from Oslo St. to L.Asanavičiūtės St. has been already finished; - 2nd stage – construction of highway from L.Asanavičiūtės St. to Ozo St. - 3rd stage – construction of highway from Ozo St. to Ukmergės road. This stage is planned to be commenced not earlier than in 2013, whereas the full western bypass is expected to be completed by spring 2015. The route of Vilnius western bypass will connect the international IXB transport corridor (Kiev-Minsk-Vilnius-Klaipėda) with the Vilnius-Panevėžys highway. Together with Vilnius southern bypass this bypass will become an integral part of the international IXB transport corridor. The 1st stage of construction works of the western bypass (for the total amount of over LTL 200 million) were carried out by Kauno Tiltai and Panevėžio Keliai companies. During this stage Lazdynai bridge, especially important for Vilnius city communication, was reconstructed. The bridge was made wider from former 6 up to 8 traffic lanes, also a new section of the bridge was built. Two-level skyways, a tunnel viaduct were built; worn out road surfaces were reconstructed, as well as new connecting roads and engineering networks, traffic lights and street lighting were installed. The 2nd stage works will be performed by Kauno Tiltai Company together with the construction companies Alvora and Fegda.
